The Charlens Company is a repertory company that has been in business for over thirty years.
Founded in 1971 in San Diego, California by
A. M. Charlens, Ph.D., the company started out as a place for young, talented actors to gain experience and exposure while delving into the complexities of a Shakespearean text.
Today, the company is filled with classically trained actors of all ages who are committed to bringing high caliber productions to the greater Los Angeles area. The company does between five and eight shows per year. While our focus is on Shakespeare, we also produce modern shows and provide a forum for new and original works.
Dr. Charlens, having been trained at RADA (The Royal Academy of Dramatic Art - UK), is always looking for a way to bring Shakespeare to the masses. The Charlens Company offers free performances of Shakespeare's plays in the park during the summer months. These shows are well attended by families and individuals of all ages. For some, this is their first glimpse at a live Shakespearean production.
The Charlens Company became incorporated as a non-profit (501C-3) in 1999. Although the company does not have a "home" theatre, it utilizes several dedicated spaces for rehearsals and performances.
The Charlens Company offers both individual and group classes taught by A.M. Charlens, including but not limited to non-verbal work, speech and diction, and classical work (with an emphasis on Shakespearean text).
Scholarships are available for students who wish to apply.
